Dr Birdsey the owner and designer of the Ergo-Exec Spinal Chair, is a practicing chiropractor that treats many people for back, neck pain and headaches. He was previously involved in lecturing Masters Students on the spine, at the University of Johannesburg, for six years. He was also involved in supervising Masters research into many spinal conditions.

Dr Paul Birdsey was also involved in giving ergonomic lectures and assessments in the corporate world. He noticed the high numbers of people suffering from back and neck pain from prolonged sitting. The majority of these people were sitting poorly on badly designed chairs which contributed greatly to their problems. Many of the chairs that people were sitting on claimed to be ergonomically designed, but put the spine in a very poor position while sitting. Thus Dr Birdsey decided to design a chair according to ergonomic and biomechanical principles of the spine in order to help ease the back and neck pain suffered by these people.
